Austria 2026: Cosmo with ‘Tanzschein’

Hosts Austria went back to a National Final for the first time in a while with Cosmo winning through:

This is an entry where I don’t have a whole lot of insight to add having not really followed the selection of this at the time and even now coming back to it there’s not a huge amount to say. It's not the shockingly bad effort many maybe made out but I agree this will struggle a lot to accumulate any notable points.

The chorus is the best part of this and German works well as a language for these “zany” entries, just look at The UK even taking that idea, but the rest of the song is a little one note and doesn't stay long in the memory. Staging at the national final considering the limitations there was fine but does need a lot of work for May. With the lighting, camera cuts and lighting there Cosmo struggled to stand out much or exude much charisma. I’m not saying he did a bad job but this part of the presentation needs a lot of focus.

Hosts have really been struggling and on the televote and have probably underperformed expectations at some point for over a decade. Given expectations are already low here that’s a concern. Austria will also have to contend with the lottery of drawing their position in the final and there’s no obvious jury appeal either, at least not enough to get them into top 10s consistently. Expecting a difficult year with maybe only one country rivalling for the wooden spoon.
