Bulgaria 2026: DARA with ‘Bangaranga’
With potentially a National Final winning margin record (I’m certainly not checking) Dara beat, er, herself with two filler songs, after previously winning the right to represent Bulgaria in their contest return:
I find this an interesting one and it's one of the few in this year's lineup bringing something new and kind of original to the contest. Whereas most this year you can see where inspiration was taken from in a Eurovision context, this is a bit less clear. Until the bridge this doesn't even particularly feel like a Kontopoulos wrote for Eurovision number.
Maybe I’ve Bangarangared my head and I’m giving this too much credit but I do think as an entry this is pretty original from a Eurovision angle - more so than any of the favourites for the jury win where that is a criteria, but is the sort of song that the jury in particular will only come on board to if it's staged to perfection - think of something like Slo-Mo for the upbeat female comparison where a genre not usually rewarded shoots to the top but with an even higher mountain to climb as a pure disaster bop with ethnic and k-pop elements.
Perhaps in style and early traction this is closest to being this year's 'Queen of Kings' and I could imagine it achieving a similar, if slightly more balanced result.
In that sense this fits a lot of dark horse criteria with a very high ceiling in my opinion if everyone is on their game and is one to watch for that reason.
The 'national final' delivered a chaotic performance which I think is driving a lot of the TikTok attention this has been getting where it's in a clear first place there. This is a very hard performance for Dara to pull off to a professional standard and sell with the right amount of knowing and charisma but competence too. It's a big ask and contributing to the 100+ price is the fear of how this looks live.
Dream team connections and Eastern leaning contest do favour this to do better than might be expected however even if staging leaves something to be desired and that +Bulgaria's success in the contest with anything half decent before 'Intention' and their withdrawal earn some further caution.
Likely to be opening the semi final but should be safely through with a good Televote score and I dont believe the jury will drag it into complete oblivion, there are a lot of potential friends for this. I'll place Bulgaria on the edge of the top 10 overall for now but it might be in there provisionally when I get around to doing my first maths now the full lineup is out.
Personal Rating: 16/20
Televote Potential: 17/20
Jury Potential: 10/20
Staging Potential: 14/20
Track Record: 13/20
Overall Rating: 70/100
Early Prediction: Semi Two 4th-7th, 10th-14th in the final.
Volatility Factor: 5/5, I wouldn't be shocked to see this knocking on the door of the top 5 (yes seriously) or also sat around 20th in the final. Thankfully it will become pretty clear based of the staging and post semi reaction, or if this can go more viral before the contest.
