Czechia 2026: Daniel Zizka with ‘Crossroads’

Czechia kept us waiting for their reveal this year with Daniel Zizka set to cross(roads) the border down to Vienna in May:

I find this quite an interesting one, although I don't have a lot of real insight to give with the pros and cons being quite clear. This ticks a lot of jury boxes if it can be executed live and is one that stylistically is in line with the likes of Gjon's Tears, Nemo and JJ. Don't let France's opera comparisons with last year fool you, this is the more similar to what the overall trend is, for what that counts...

The problems come in the dissapointing lack of a chorus where even being generous it’s like 10 seconds long. More damaging is that it doesn't particularly feel intentional and more that this was 30 seconds too long and they chose to save time there. Just when it looks like Daniel is finally going to give it some, we're back into the pretentious more understated verses. Eventually there's the big ending and payoff but how many viewers are lost before we get there?

We might be able to overlook this somewhat from a country with a better track record but there are big questions over whether Czechia can put on a production of scale required to hold interest in this. I think we're getting the same team that have been doing their entries since 2022 and the record considering the resources available has been fine although I don't know if that cuts it for this song. Czechia obviously have a poor public vote record and start on practically zero points.The reaction overall where this is around mid table in general fan sentiment is also not a great barometer with this probably one that underperforms in actual voting vs how those in the bubble see it.

I do think there's a wide range on this and *if* staging and performance are on the level required (very high) this feels a lot closer to the general consensus jury favourites of Australia, Denmark and France. Right now that might be a bit of a stretch to bank on. A more likely level of support could be a jury save in semi final two. It's a very tough semi final and there are doubts this can make it into the Televote top 10 there.

Overall, I'm looking at 2022 when all of Switzerland, Azerbaijan and Australia -countries without any guaranteed points sent male ballads and gathered basically all of their points from the juries. That's the likely fate here in the semi and final but I'll be keeping an eye on some of the longer odds more optimistic outcomes.
